Publisher Felix Montague invites a number of people to his home. He is about to publish a book of memoirs by Eliot Vines and it will expose the various skeletons in each guests closet. Vines is due to join the group and Montague proposes they murder him – when the lights go out one of their number shall stab him. Montague has arranged for someone to telephone the police and confess and for a dress and wig to be found near the house. The guests must swear that there was another woman at the house and these were the items she wore. However, when Vines arrives he is suspicious of the way the others are acting and he telephones the police before one of the guests can strike.
